'The Farmer's Award' - in Memory of Leonard and Lucy

Leonard and Lucy were always a huge support of the youth in agriculture.  What mattered to them was the time, and effort youth put into their project. They always looked for a youth with a positive attitude, was eager to learn, and always offered a helping hand to others that needed it. This award is given to youth that has been nominated by their leaders, peers, mentors, etc., that have gone above and beyond.

You can contribute to this fund by making a donation, or buying a chocolate bar here at Rietdyk's. 100% of these proceeds go to The Farmer's Award.

Leonard Rietdyk passed away August 2016 after a brief struggle with cancer. Leonard spent many years at the Clark County Fair, from his childhood into all of his adulthood. He started showing cattle in 4-H in his youth, and continued showing open class beef and dairy as an adult. Leonard was the Livestock Superintendent for many years. He would go out of his way to help anyone in need. When a neighbor needed a hand with a sick animal, equipment repairs, and other tasks, he was always there to help. He always had advice and never expected anything in return. Leonard lived and breathed farming. He spent countless hours taking care of livestock, fixing fences, putting up hay, and all of the other endless tasks that keeps the farm running.

Lucy (Rietdyk) Hegge passed away March 2021 after a hard battle with lymphoma. Lucy also spent many years at the Clark County Fair. One of her biggest passions was 4-H. She was a lifelong 4-H member showing dairy cattle. Lucy was also the 1974 Dairy Princess. She was the 4-H Dairy Barn Superintendent for many years. She continued attending the fair to show her support for the Junior Livestock Auction. As the owner of Rietdyk's Feed Mill, she enjoyed showing her appreciation to the youth and the community, which she often saw while they purchased feed for their livestock. Described as a "community icon" and natural-born leader, she championed countless fundraisers for the community and volunteered for many organizations. She was very generous with both her time and talents, and was always mentoring employees, family, and friends.
